FBI says Iranian hackers are targeting both presidential campaigns

According to a report by The Washington Post, a phishing campaign believed to be linked to Iran has been targeting members of the Trump and Harris camps in an attempt to interfere with the upcoming presidential election in the United States. Susie Wiles, a senior Trump adviser, was specifically named as one of the targets. Federal agents collaborated with tech giants like Microsoft and Google to investigate spear phishing emails received by staff of presidential candidates. Google published a report detailing how an Iranian government-backed threat actor called APT42 has been targeting high-profile users in Israel and the US, including individuals associated with President Biden, Vice President Harris, and former President Trump. Roger Stone, an informal advisor to Trump, fell victim to the phishing emails, allowing hackers to take control of his account. The authorities did not find evidence of successful compromise in the Harris camp. Officials have blamed Iran and Russia for spreading misinformation related to the 2020 US Presidential Election, but concerns remain about sophisticated cyber attacks from countries like Russia and China that may go undetected. Russia has been linked to election meddling in the US for years, with officials believing that Vladimir Putin ordered a campaign to destabilize the American vote in 2016.
