OpenAI’s new o1 model is slower, on purpose

OpenAI has introduced its latest artificial intelligence model called o1, which the company claims can perform complex reasoning tasks more effectively than its predecessors. Trained to think through problems before responding, o1 aims to refine its thinking process, try different strategies, and recognize mistakes, making it potentially useful for healthcare researchers, physicists, and software developers. Current AI models are essentially glorified autocomplete systems, lacking true intelligence. By resetting the counter with o1, OpenAI hopes to transition to a new era of AI capable of engaging in complex problem-solving and logical thinking, as demonstrated by its success on challenging benchmark tasks in various fields. Despite some limitations such as slower processing and inability to eliminate hallucinations, o1 is only available to paying ChatGPT customers in a preview stage, along with the launch of a more streamlined version called o1-mini.
